Reviews of Oxo 1068557 Good Grips Professional 14-Piece Knife Block Set
1.) GOOD Knives, GREAT Value
Reviewed by: Thomas Tracy Northern GA, United States

These are very good knives and an excellent value. Yes, they are stamped, not forged, but they cost much, MUCH less then similar sets of quality forged knives. They arrived razor sharp and have stayed razor sharp with use of the included steel.
And these are indeed QUALITY stamped knives. They have a full length tang which gives them a good, balanced weight that feels nice in your hand. The handles are comfortable and non-slip. In short, they are a pleasure to use.
Top that off with a surprisingly (at this price) high-quality wooden block and I couldn't be more pleased with this set of knives. Like another reviewer, I completed this set (there are 3 empty slots in the block, 2 for additional knives & 1 for poultry shears) with the 6-1/2-Inch Santoku Knife, the 5" Boning Knife and the Poultry Shears. I have been using these knives daily for the last 3 months.
One thing about these knives that I haven't seen any other reviewer mention - they have 15° edge bevels (like most Asian knives) as opposed to 20° bevels (like most German knives). I mention this not as a negative or positive regarding the knives (although some will argue the merits of one vs. the other), but as a "heads up" when using a steel on these knives or buying a sharpener. You need to use a 15° angle against the steel when doing the former & if you buy the latter and want to maintain the 15° bevel (which is a double bevel on these Oxo knives by the way, unlike some high-end Japanese knives which have a single bevel), be sure and order an appropriate sharpener.
Finally, in an attempt to address some criticisms in other reviews and the two questions I saw in one review comment:
1) To maintain a sharp edge, these knives, like all other knives that are not of the "laser ever-sharp" variety, require periodic steeling to realign the edge. I steel a given knife before every 3 or 4 uses (just a few strokes on each side - no biggie) and they are as sharp as new.
2) Oxo recommends hand-washing, which I have done & I have experienced no spotting or discoloration of the knives after 3 months of daily use.
3) The steak knives are smooth-edged, not serrated (and cut a steak very nicely!)
4) These knives cut tomatoes very nicely - I have used both the santoku knife & the 5" serrated utility knife for this task, but I prefer the non-serrated santoku. (The only two serrated knives in this set are the aformentioned 5" utility & the 8" bread knife).

OXO is our favorite brand of kitchen tools and when we found this wonderful collection of practical knives in a gift set we bought one for our house and one for a wedding gift.
There are more expensive knives available but these are well-designed and high quality and an absolute bargain for $100.
All knives are sharp when you buy them, but no knife stays sharp forever. In fact the measure of a good knife is its ability to take and hold an edge after resharpening. OXO PRO Series knives do indeed take and hold an edge after resharpening. The knives are based on OXO's Universal Design concept and feature non-slip, comfort handles. I also like the fact that all OXO products have a no-nonsense satisfaction guarantee.
For the price of this handsome set you could go out and buy one overpriced German or French knife, which will also need resharpening, or you could spend over $1,000 for some fancy knife sets that will not slice tomatoes or bread any better than OXO's knives.
Just think of the $900 saved by going for OXO Pro Knives instead of inflated German cutlery, and use the savings for a ticket for yourself to Europe.

These knives are very nice to look at and the wood block does not appear cheap. The knives are razor sharp and have not dulled in the two months we have had them. They have shown no signs of rusting. We hand wash them and towel dry. We were so impressed with the set that we bought three more differently styled knives from OXO.

I got these knives as a wedding present and I absolutely love them. Before getting this full knife set I had been using a few average priced knives that I thought were ok. Once I got this set I realized that my old knives were definitely sub-par. I had gotten used to having to force my way through harder foods such as carrots with my old not so sharp blades, but the OXO knives were incredibly sharp! They cut through everything I threw at them with such ease that I was in total amazement.
This set is the best set you can get for such a low prices. The knives are very sharp, comfortable to hold, and look really nice on the counter. I highly recommend them.

This set contains the best knives I ever owned. I really didn't need true professional chef quality so these will suit me quite well for many years to come. The grips work great even when they are wet and that's a big plus to me. I also bought a 6.5" santoku knife, a boning knife and poultry scissors so my set needs nothing and they all fit into the block. The total cost for everything including shipping was still under $200.00 (through Amazon) - a great bargain in my opinion.

I bought these as a gift, but when I opened the box and checked out the set, I considered keeping it. Even with the other good reviews here, I didn't expect such quality from a set that cost less than $80. The wood block is substantial and attractive, and knives themselves look and feel like some of the high-priced German models. OXO also lives up to its "good grips" name with handles that are very comfortable and well balanced.

With so many cutlery options on the market, OXO has hit the nail on the head again by offering quality knives at a bargain price. All the knives are well balanced with a comfortable grip, and a surprisingly sharp edge.
This set is a great solution for anyone that needs an inexpensive way to replace an old knife set, or as a starter set for a wedding gift or college student, as the edge on these blades will stay sharp with minimal attention.
I have seen these knives rated as a "Best Buy" in a number of magazines... most recently in Dwell Magazine, who appreciate the sleek look of these, I'm sure.
This block would be a steal without the steak knife set, but OXO has ensured that you get everything you need in this block.

I must say that I am so glad I got these knives. Of course I am coming from 7 year old serrated knives that just didn't stand the test of time. I can tell these will last me forever, if I (and my wife) take care of them. They are very very sharp, a slight cut on my thumb from drying the chefs knife will attest to that. I am so excited to have these knives. There are spaces in the block for some scissors, the 6 1/2" santoku knife, and the 6" Chef Knife. In the end these are great knives, great grips, and very nicely weighted. Love em.

My husband and sister bought this knife set for me for Christmas and I am VERY happy with them. They are sharp, comfortable to use, and have a wide selection of sizes for just about any task. The knife we probably use the most is the "4-inch Santoku". It is perfect for all those little jobs you have to do while preparing a meal from cutting herbs to slicing vegetables such as cucumbers. There are extra slots in the block and I am having a difficult time deciding just what I might need since so far the knives provided have more then filled my needs. Perhaps the OXO 6 1/2" Santoku and a good Usuba Bocho knife.

I purchased this knife set for a vacation home due to it's reasonable price, but I wish I had purchased a second set for my regular home. The knives are all very, very sharp, considering this set is stamped, not forged as most (considerably) more expensive sets are.
The knives (aside from the steak knives) are all nicely balanced and have a good feel to them, and are very sharp as noted above. You have a nice variety of blades too.
The blades of the steak knives are a little thinner and lighter than I prefer, as they will slightly flex, but since they are so sharp, you don't need to apply very much pressure. From the looks of them, I don't believe I would call the steak knives "Professional" as the rest of the set (plus the other knives had a metal cap at the end of the handle), but as I said, they are still adequate due to their sharpness.
The block has two open knife slots and an opening for scissors, so I rounded the set out with a 6" chef, a 6-1/2" Santoku, and the professional poultry shears, although now the knife set is so large, I probably won't ever need to use all of the knives.
All in all, this seems to be an easy choice. In addition, Consumer Reports rates this set a "CR Best Buy". You will be hard pressed to find a better value.

These knives are very very sharp right out of the box. The grip handles are great for comfort. I would definitely recommend this set over the cheaper ones that are found at stores like Walmart. And while you could pay $400 for Wusthof, you would be overpaying and not getting that much better of a knife set. This is true for me and 90% of us who are not professional chefs. The best part about this set is it comes with a sharpener while most others don't. Get the herb scissors and maybe a large Santoku to fill out the block and you'll be all set.

Don't let anyone who is selling knives try & tell you you need to spend hundreds on a good knife set. As a rule the steel used needs to be from either Japan or Germany ( AXIS STEEL ?). This is the only set I have ever seen with Japanese steel for this price. I bought these for my RV & they are every bit as good as my home Wustof set I paid over $500 for on sale. You also need to be careful with the expensive brands because they are also pumping out some cheap chinese garbage now that won't hold an edge later. Really if taken care of, a set made from good steel, including this one, could last for generations. Though the sharpener would need to be replaced.

exellent product, returned crappy and exhorbitant cutco set, immediately after seeing stains after washing. They also wouldn't hold an edge, couldn't cut cleanly, and were very imbalanced. These were the opposite. Inexpensive, hold edge well, don't stain, even in the dishwasher. Well balanced and cut cleanly. For the price, I could by two sets for myself, and one for every person I know for the price of one cutco set. My wife and I cook a lot. I clean and cut Meat for storage. And she does a ton of vegetable and food prep for dinners. We love these knives. These aren't European, but with the amount of cutting we do, and the occasional necessary diswasher clean up, we thought we just weren't ready for the european knives yet. P.S. Oxo doesn't recommend dishwasher, and you should straighten the edge if you do it. But after trying the cutco, we became a little more realistic about our knife needs and our knife lifestyle. There are plenty of knives for different tasks and they are etched to indicate what the primary use should be. They are easy to sharpen and I also really love the block for storage for 2 great reasons: 1. they leave extra slots so you can add more knives in the future and 2. the slot at the bottom for the kitchen shears (which I also added and love) is really handy.
I know these are not the top of the line knives, but for the price and the variety, I truly believe this is a great value. I have used Oxo kitchen products in the past and I am yet to be disappointed. Time and time again, they deliver quality products at an excellent value. This knife set is no exception.
Just a word up front about knife sets in general. Even if you don't feel you will use every knife in a set, it will usually be less expensive to buy a set and then add on a knife you might want. Typically, you will find a savings in buying knives in a set rather than individually.
What's in the box?
* 8 inch Chef's Knife
* 8 inch Slicer
* 8 inch Bread Knife
* 4 inch Santoku
* 5 inch Utility Knife
* 3 ½ inch Paring Knife
* Sharpening Steel
* Six Steak Knives
* Angled wood block in light maple finish.
* Small instruction pamphlet.
The blades are all stainless steel, stamped, and include a lifetime warranty. While these are not forged blades, they perform as good as some knife sets I've used, some of which were five or six times more expensive. While the blades are stainless steel and dishwasher-safe, Oxo recommends washing and drying by hand for best results. This is not uncommon for knife sets.
The blades are all comfortable to hold and use. The handles are black and made of a nonslip rubber. The knives all perform extremely well when used for their intended purpose. The chef's knife cuts paper thing vegetables, the Santoku dices nicely, and so on. As stated in the instruction pamphlet, it is best to run your blade across the steel a few times before and after use to keep it at its sharpest. Oxo's suggested sharpening method (how to hold the steel and blade while sharpening) is fine, but you will probably find it easier to master, and more comfortable, using some of the more typical approaches which can be found on YouTube, etc.
The block has two empty slots (three if you count the space toward the bottom of the block face, which can hold shears.
About the only observation I can make about this product being less than perfect would be that the Santoku , at 4 inches, is really a "mini Santoku" and many cooks may prefer a more typical Santoku of 6 inches or more. But this knife set is such a great value and of such good quality that the smallish Santoku cannot detract from it.
I would buy this knife set again in a heartbeat. If you find the small Santoku not to your liking, you can easily compliment this set with Oxo's 6 1/2 inch Santoku, also offered at a very reasonable price.

The biggest complaint I could find from other reviews was that the steak knives were of a lower quality than the rest of the set and that the blades tarnished easily. The steak knives are of a lesser quality but they are by no means low quality. We have not had any blades tarnish after a couple months of frequent use. This is probably because we don't put them in the dishwasher. These are not intended to be cleaned in a dishwasher just like any other quality knife. So far we love the set and the price couldn't be better.

They are attractive and the block has room to add my favorite OXO kitchen shears. I'm so happy with the purchase!

I have owned these knives for about 5 years now and they are still going strong. They have been through many careless roommates who mistreated them and only show minor battle scars. They are perfect for the everyday cook, maybe not fancy enough for the chef. They have a great weight and feel good in your hand, and they cut wonderfully. My favorites are the serrated utility knife and the 4" santoku, though I have used every knife for one thing or another. Mine has a plastic block, not wood like this one, but it has actually stood up well. If you are looking for a set under a hundred bucks, I highly recommend this one.
One note, the steak knives have a very thin blade, and the battle scars I speak of are mostly tiny bends or nicks (the kind you can't see but can feel) at the tip of the steak knives. This only happens if they are mistreated which is surprising to me because they seem flimsy. They aren't. Also they are 5 years old and the most used of all the knives, so I am impressed nonetheless.

I purchased these knives from Amazon after reading a review in consumer reports. Though the pamphlet that came with the knives said that they were already sharp and didn't need to be sharpened prior to the first use, the knives seem rather dull to the touch. When I examined them closer, I could see that these knives must have been purchase by someone prior and returned, as each knife (including the steak knives) had marks all along each blade that must have been made by someone who attempted to sharpen them but botched the job. My assumption was confirmed when I examined a set of these knives in Homegoods and found those knives to be quite sharp and free of any scratches. Needless to say, I returned the set to Amazon and have purchased them locally - and am quite happy with the results. They are a very good value, especially since I found them for $49 rather than the $79 via Amazon. This is my first time returning anything I've purchase from Amazon, hopefully the last time - but they make the return policy very easy and hassle free.

The other reviews here persuaded me to give this knife set a try, and I haven't been disappointed. Sharp knives make such a huge difference. It's funny, though, I noticed in some of the reviews that people mentioned getting cut. I've accidentally cut myself with these knives too. And the weird thing is I didn't notice it when it happened. Sneaky knives. I'm wondering if it might not actually be the top part of the blade that's cutting me. It's somewhat sharp too. If this set were truly dishwasher-safe, it would be ideal. I noticed the description here says they're dishwasher-safe, but the box says otherwise. I tried running some of them through the dishwasher once and got mysterious brown spots. They came off, but I won't do that again. I guess most knives can't maintain a sharp edge after being run through the dishwasher repeatedly anyway. All in all, a great purchase.

I bought the OXO Good Grips Professional 14-Piece Knife Block Set to replace the KitchenAid set that I had for a few years. I have a beautiful kitchen of solid cherry mahogany cabinets, stainless steel appliances and polished granite counters. The KitchenAid set had oxidized to the point that they appeared rusty and were an eye-sore. I could not remove the oxidation so I removed the knives.
The Oxo replaced them and have performed as beautifully as they still appear. They are not the high end in terms of price but they are attractive and designed well. The handles are pliant and comfortable. The blades razor sharp. The compliment of knives is more than adequate for any culinary adventure. If Consumer Reports is correct, they are by far the best buy in the mid-range knife class. Of course, if you need a designer name, there are many inferior knives at much higher prices.

After a number of go-rounds with cheap, dull knife sets that could have doubled as spoons, I decided I wanted some really good knives. Wusthof or Henckels for me, nothing less. Then I looked at the prices that these sets were commanding, and I suddenly found myself much more contented with my rubbishy, cheap knives.
I really just stumbled across this set while perusing Amazon one day. It had received such good reviews that I figured I could take a chance and spend the eighty clams needed to purchase it.
These are good knives. They arrived extremely sharp right out of the box. Whereas in the past I always defaulted to the large chef's knife for most cutting and chopping tasks, it's not necessary to do that with these. They're all sharp, well-balanced, and do their respective jobs admirably.
One evening, while chopping some vegetables, I set the chef's knife down on the counter, with the blade angled slightly upwards. Like an idiot, I accidentally slid the tip of one finger ever so briefly and lightly against the upturned blade. Now, for all my previous knife sets, that wouldn't have done a thing. But this knife is so sharp that it sliced me open quite handily, and the thing is, I didn't feel any pain while it was doing it. It's REALLY sharp.
I'm still trying to learn how to use the sharpener so as not to wreck the blades. Nevertheless, this is an excellent knife set at a reasonable price, and I do recommend it.

Previous reviewers mentioned how the handles cracked whenever you put these knives through a heated dry cycle in a dishwasher, so I only wash these knives on the air-dry cycle. This isn't that big of a problem, even though it leaves all my dishes and glasses a bit spotty coming out of the dishwasher, because my dishwasher is an old P.O.S.. The problem is spots are beginning to form on my knives, spots very much resembling rust. This isn't supposed to happen to stainless steel, but I assure you I have scrubbed these knives to try and rid them of the brownish spotting and I haven't had any luck yet.

This is an update to the review below. These knives were very sharp out of the box, but they get dull pretty quick with moderate use, even within a few months. My old Chicago and Farberware knives are slightly sharper now, and they're old, and were not high quality to begin with. I don't know how to accout for it. We use the sharpening tool, but without good results. As I recall, consumers gave them a best buy, but they should review a used set, 6 months old, and see if they still feel that way.
Wow, are these sharp or what? They make my old set seem like butter knives, and I'm not kidding. I was a little concerned about the good grip handles, but they are very comfortable to use, and inspire confidence, since cutting angles become very precise. I wouldn't spend a penny more unless you just HAVE to buy German or Japanese. Save your money. Buy this set, and maybe one expensive knife for your ego. My guess is, you'll probably just use the Oxo's anyway, so buy them first and see if your ego really demands it. I read too many reviews, needlessly. I can't imagine a better value out there, stop shopping and order them.

Four or five of the knives are already just plain dull, and despite resharpening, won't cut anything. As I use one a couple of times it becomes so dull that I can't use it anymore. I am SORELY DISAPPOINTED in this product, and I don't understand how so many people are calling them excellent. I am certainly no expert, but hey, I expect a new set of knives to last at least a year or so.
